Newfoundland and Labrador Child Care Training Requirements:

Newfoundland and Labrador uses a combined certification and classification system. Those who meet provincial qualifications may be certified and classified. Certification is done in five levels: Entry, Level 1, 2, 3, and 4; Classification is done by preschool, infant, school-age, or family child care. A minimum of 30 hours of professional development is required in the three-year certificate period to recertify.

Since Newfoundland and Labrador both certifies and classify early childhood educators, there are orientation courses specifically designed for the age group of children that the educator will be working with. The orientation courses are regularly offered in a self-study, distance (correspondence) format through the Office of the Registrar. The courses are sometimes offered (in whole or in part) in a workshop format. In order to be considered for the purposes of certification, the workshop facilitator and materials must be pre-approved by the Registrar. Certified early childhood educators may receive 5 hours of credit for professional development upon completion of any one of the orientation courses. Lillio Academy courses are not approved as orientation courses but can be used for professional development hours needed for recertification.
