The Practice of Early Childhood Education in Ontario:

In Ontario, the College of Early Childhood Educators (CECE) regulates  RECEs in the public interest. An individual who works within the scope  of practice of early childhood education defined in the Early  Childhood Educators Act, 2007, and who meets the requirements for  registration must be registered with the College. The titles and  designations Early Childhood Educator (ECE) and Registered Early  Childhood Educator (RECE) are protected under law and can only be  used by members in good standing with the College. In Ontario,  RECEs can also receive professional certification through the  (AECEO), a voluntary professional association that administers its  own voluntary certification process.

Continuous Professional Learning (CPL) Requirements for RECEs

In Ontario, RECEs must renew their membership annually. All RECEs  are required to fulfill the CPL requirements, which includes a one year portfolio process where they reflect on their practice, develop  one professional learning goal, and plan, engage in and document  their professional learning activities. RECEs are required to start  the CPL Portfolio Cycle after their first renewal and complete it  annually. Members may choose to work with colleagues and seek  input or support in completing the CPL Portfolio components;  however, all CPL Program records must be the member’s own work,  not a copy or reproduction of another person’s words or ideas.

All members must keep their CPL program records for at least two (2)  years. These records consist of the following:

  • Expectations for Practice Module Certificate of Completion,  Commit to Kids Certificate of Completion and Teatree Tells  Participation Record

  • Reflection and Planning Tool

  • Record of Professional Learning

  • Documentation/evidence of participation in learning  activities/experiences
