🧪 Key Learning Outcomes

  • Self-regulation? What is that? Self-regulation is the body’s response to stress. It’s the system that is always trying to find a balance.
  • Your body is like the thermometer in your house, and if the temperature drops then your furnace will come on. Our bodies are similar, it has both the up and down regulation called homeostasis.
  • Self-Regulation vs. Self Control – Self-regulation is about understanding where self-control is monitoring and managing.
  • We have learned different coping strategies where we find a “quick” fix to bring ourselves back to a normal state. Over time these strategies can lead to negative outcomes. Some of the common short-term strategies are: self-blame, bingeing, isolation, and not addressing the cause.
  • It is really important to practice helpful and effective, positive, self-regulation techniques.
  • It’s never too late to start practicing positive self-regulation.
  • Stress!! it’s anything to causes the body to react and requires adjustment.
  • The red brain (Limbic system) is responsible for our emotional responses. If we react with this part of our brain then we can find ourselves yelling and reacting with higher emotion.
  • The blue brain (Neocortex) it’s the logical part of the brain. This part of the brain allows you to react in a positive way to situations and allow for growth.
  • Children are really only born with the red part of the brain and the blue part grows with them. If they don’t know how to respond then they typically act out, scream, or cry.
  • There are 5 domains of stress are biological, emotional, cognitive, social, and pro-social.
  • The key to self-regulations begins with SELF
  • Get physical, there are links to physical activity and positive changes in cognitive development.
