In this session, we were joined by Lissarette Nisnevich, Early Childhood Professional, and Founder of Pequenines. Lissarette talked about her definition of resilience, how children can build it, and gave us great tips and strategies of how to build it in the classrooms and at home.
🎤Our Special Guest!
“Born and raised in the Dominican Republic with fully bilingual education, I started my career as an assistant teacher at the age of 15. Over the years, I was blessed with opportunities to travel the world teaching ESL, designing curriculums, and doing volunteer work in local communities. These opportunities not only enriched my understanding of the world but also widened my horizons as an educator.
With more than a decade of experience in 30+ different countries and a Masters in Early Childhood, I settled in New York City and opened a Daycare center and a Preschool of my own. During my travels, I’ve tested my ability to plan, design, and implement curriculums in different regions of the world. As a Director, I am passionate about the work I do within my community.”
🧪Key Learning Outcomes from Lissarette
- Resilience is an ability or a skill that you are not born with but you develop and build over time.
- Resilient children are those who bounce back but they approach challenges in a healthy way. They are confident to take risks in life and understand how to grow from making mistakes.
- As an adult, you model how to manage emotions in a healthy way.
- The first three years are the most critical, and so starting early makes a difference in a child’s future. Everything affects the adult that a child becomes; when we start any skill at an early age we have a better chance later in life.
- It’s human to go through a range of emotions at a healthy pace and a child is still growing to become capable of managing all these emotions.
- We as educators are the regulated self to help meet the dis-regulated child to help come back to time and space.
- Embrace mistakes! It means you are trying and you’re trying new things.
- Help children to focus their energy in a positive direction and use it for a positive outcome.
- Every educator is a rockstar!
- A resilient child will take healthy risks, manage their emotions in a healthy way, and is able to include others. Empathy is part of resilience; understanding when you need to step back as an adult and ask the right questions is the hard part, but part of building that resilience.
