For example, a toddler building with blocks is not only refining their fine motor skills but also engaging in critical thinking and problem-solving as they figure out how to balance the pieces. Free play fosters independence, encouraging children to make decisions and explore their environment at their own pace.
- Guided Play: In guided play, teachers take a more active role by setting up activities that allow for exploration within a framework. For instance, teachers might set up a dramatic play area where children take on roles like “store clerk” or “chef.” Through this type of play, children engage in social interaction, use language in context, and practice problem-solving in a hands-on way. The role of the teacher here is to facilitate exploration without dictating the course of play, allowing children to discover answers for themselves (Sylva et al., 2004).
- Interactive Learning: Interactive play encourages communication and collaboration between children and educators. This can be seen in activities where children engage in discussions, ask questions, and receive prompts from their teachers. For example, a preschool teacher might invite children to participate in a group activity that involves building structures with Lego blocks. While the children are constructing their creations, the teacher asks open-ended questions to spark thinking and extend learning. Interactive play helps children connect their learning with real-world applications and further fosters critical thinking (Bonawitz et al., 2011).
Each of these types of play supports different aspects of child development, from language acquisition to emotional regulation. By integrating a balance of free play, guided play, and interactive learning experiences into the classroom, educators can cater to the varied learning styles of young children while promoting their overall growth.

For instance, when children are building a tower from blocks, they may need to experiment with different ways of stacking them to prevent the tower from falling. This hands-on exploration nurtures their ability to think critically and approach problems from multiple angles (Fisher et al., 2013).
