Week of the Young Child 2026: Simple Ways to Celebrate (and What to Expect This Year)

The Week of the Young Child (WOYC) is just around the corner (April 11-17)and it’s one of the most meaningful opportunities of the year to celebrate early learning, honour educators, and spotlight the incredible growth that happens in the early years.

Led by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, WOYC is a week-long celebration focused on the importance of high-quality early childhood education and the role it plays in shaping confident, capable, and curious learners.

Here’s the good news: participating in WOYC doesn’t mean overhauling your plans or adding more to an already full plate. Instead, it’s about making small, intentional shifts that bring visibility to the meaningful learning and important work already happening in your centre, while inviting families into the experience.

How Lillio is Participating

To celebrate alongside you during WOYC 2026, we’ll be sharing a new blog each day aligned with the official themes. Each post explores simple, engaging ways to bring the theme to life in your classrooms, without adding extra prep time.

Here’s a sneak peek at what’s coming:

  • 🎵 Music Monday: How to Bring Music Into Your Early Learning Curriculum
  • 🍎 Tasty Tuesday: Cooking with Preschoolers: Learning Through Food and Exploration
  • 🤝 Work Together Wednesday: Helping Educators Build Trust and Respect With Each Other
  • 🎨 Artsy Thursday: Process Art Activities for Infants, Toddlers, and Preschoolers
  • 👨‍👩‍👧 Family Friday: Family Engagement Strategies That Strengthen Your Centre Community

Each blog will include simple ideas, real classroom applications, and clear connections to child development, intentionally designed to use the materials you already have on hand, so you can celebrate with purpose.

Simple Ways to Participate in WOYC

Whether you go all-in or keep things low-key, WOYC is about intentional celebration, not perfection. No need to reinvent your entire week or stay up late planning. Here are a few easy (and realistic) ways to get involved.

1. Start with What You’re Already Doing

You don’t need to plan entirely new activities, in fact, you’re likely already doing more than enough. WOYC is about shining a light on it:

  • Talk about WOYC with your children and families to build excitement and a sense of shared celebration.
  • Celebrate your own hard work and recognize your colleagues along the way.
  • Turn everyday moments into simple, shareable learning stories.
  • Make the invisible learning visible with a childcare management software so families can truly see the value of each day.

2. Lean Into the Daily Themes

The daily themes are meant as inspiration, not a to-do list. You can celebrate WOYC without adding any extra work, just sprinkle in small, meaningful moments.

  • Music Monday: Play music during transitions and let kids move to the rhythm.
  • Tasty Tuesday: Invite children to help prepare a snack using what’s already in your kitchen, or use snack time as a sensory experience and talk about the food you are eating, how it tastes and how it feels.
  • Work Together Wednesday: Encourage teamwork during everyday play and routines with team activities (such as working together to build a tower or simply shouting out teamwork during classroom clean up).
  • Artsy Thursday: Turn simple materials into a collaborative art piece that the children can work on together.
  • Family Friday: Using a childcare management software, snap and share photos of the week to celebrate with families and bring them into the excitement.

3. Bring Families Along for the Experience

WOYC is a perfect opportunity to help families see (and celebrate) the meaningful work that early childhood educators do every day. Sharing the learning journey with a childcare management software, strengthens connections and gives families a window into their child’s growth:

  • Share photos or quick updates throughout the week so families can see the magic in action. Highlight how each activity supports development, showing the intentional learning behind the fun.
  • Invite families to participate in simple ways, like sending in a favourite song for you to play or story for circle time, or even joining the classroom to read or take part in an activity with the children.
  • Welcome families with a self-serve coffee and donut station in the entryway on Friday morning as a simple way to say thank you for being part of your community.

4. Celebrate Your Educators

Every day, your educators make learning meaningful and memorable for children. WOYC is a great opportunity to acknowledge their hard work and the impact they have on children and families in your community.

  • Recognize your team with simple, thoughtful gestures, like a thank-you note or a small token of appreciation like coffee and donuts in the kitchen.
  • Share their contributions with families so they can see the care and effort behind each day.
  • Give your educators a chance to celebrate each other. Create opportunities for quick shout-outs during meetings or set up a “Valentine-style” activity, where each person decorates a small bag with their name and colleagues leave notes of gratitude for each other on Work Together Wednesday.

Why WOYC Matters

In a field where so much of the work can go unseen, WOYC creates a moment to pause and say: this matters, you matter.

It’s a chance to:

  • Advocate for the importance of early childhood education.
  • Build stronger connections between educators and families.
  • Celebrate the joy, curiosity, and capability of young children.

And just as importantly, it’s a reminder for educators themselves, that the everyday moments they create are shaping lifelong learning.

Stay Tuned

We’ll be kicking things off with our first themed blog on Music Monday, so be sure to check back on our blog or instagram for fresh ideas each day of the week.

Whether you try one activity or all five, you’re part of something bigger, a collective celebration of early learning, community, and the educators who make it all possible.

Using a childcare management software like Lillio makes it easy to document activities, capture photos and learning highlights, and keep families connected and engaged throughout the week, helping build excitement and deepen that sense of community.

We see all that you do, and we appreciate you! Let’s make WOYC 2026 a week to remember.
