In this webinar we were welcomed by Diane Goyette, founder and owner of Early Childhood Specialties LLC! Diane is joined us to discuss effective strategies for handling tantrums and meltdowns in the early childhood classroom. We discussed a structure of emotional support that will transform your behavior management with young children. The 4 C’s framework will help you boost adults’ emotional intelligence, enabling everyone to work with children and adults more compassionately, confidently and competently. When teachers use the 4 C’s in the classroom, they will help improve children’s’ behavior, contribute to their resiliency, build their self-regulation skills, support their social-emotional development and much more! Keep reading to access the recording and the slides!

Key Learning Outcomes from Diane!

  • When children are upset, they need three things from us:  Connection, Calming, and Compassion.
  • Connection calms the stress response, and supports children in self-regulation
  • The 4 C’s for handling tantrums with confidence: Connection, calming, compassion and capacity-building
  • The first step, make sure you calm yourself. You cannot support a dysregulated child, if you are also dysregulated.
  • When addressing a tantrum, adjust your expectations and remind yourself of where the child is developmentally. Ask yourself questions such as, “Is the child overstimulated in this environment?”
  • Help children reflect on their feelings (only when they are calm and ready to learn)
