In this webinar we were welcomed by Christina Deak and Andrea Benson, the co-founders of Mindful Parenting to discuss approaching challenging behaviors in the classroom with mindfulness! In this webinar we explored tangible and research-based tools that educators can use directly with their students to diffuse challenging behaviors before they escalate. We discussed preventative strategies and how to model problem solving with young children. Christina Deak – Co-Founder Mindful Parenting
Christina graduated with a Master in Teaching from Seattle University and taught in elementary and preschool classrooms for 10 years. During her time teaching, she became very passionate about early childhood education and parent education. Christina has a son who is 5 years old.
Andrea Benson- Co-Founder Mindful Parenting
Andrea studied psychology at Western Washington University and then continued on to get her Master in Education and applied behavior analysis at the University of Washington. She has worked both in school and clinical settings running preschool programs and social skills. For the last 7 years, she has worked as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst and behavioral consultant for families of young children. She is also a mother of twin girls.

- Building connection with young children before correcting them can help diffuse and lessen challenging behaviours
- Problem solving can be modelled with boundaries and mindfulness. When adults remain calm and present, it can help children navigate their own emotions in the moment. This shared calm create security and connection.
- All behaviours, are a form of communication. Even the most challenging behaviours are serving a function or a purpose.
- 4 steps to positively respond to challenging behaviour: Get curious (why is this behaviour happening, share your calm, connect with them before correcting, teach them a new skill.
